The cinematic look of the VariCam in the palm of your hand
The VariCam LT offers extraordinary image quality to realize your "vision".
The VariCam LT: compact, lightweight and with high-end cinema quality!
The VariCam LT's advanced calibration tools, file management and proxy recording features are a "revolution" for workflow optimization.
The VariCam LT comes in a lightweight, compact magnesium housing and offers the same image quality as the larger VariCam 35. The Super 35 sensor, identical to that of the VariCam 35, boasts a wide dynamic range, extended color gamut and high sensitivity for 4K image acquisition. It features two native ISO settings of 800 and 5,000. The native ISO sensitivity of 5000 favors clear shots in very low light conditions. Its size and design allow a wide range of shooting styles. This new camera can also be used in a comfortable, ergonomic shoulder-mount configuration, or mounted on a bracket or drone.
The VariCam LT incorporates a new feature with its EF*1 lens mount, enabling a wide choice of lenses to be used. The EF*1 bracket can be removed by the end-user and replaced by an optional PL bracket, giving even more lens choice. The workflow of the VariCam LT is very similar to that of the VariCam 35. Both cameras feature dual-codec recording, allowing the user to record in a main codec as well as in a smaller proxy file. In addition, each camera has an integrated color calibration function and supports AVC-Intra 4K and Apple ProRes*2 codecs.
VariCam LT, impressive cinematic image quality
Same sensor as VariCam 35
The VariCam LT features the Super 35 MOS sensor designed specifically for the VariCam 35. It enables 4K (4096×2160) and UHD (3840×2160) resolution, and offers high sensitivity, low noise, wide dynamic range and cinematic depth of field. This sensor received the 2015 Hollywood Post Alliance Engineering Excellence Award.
Wide dynamic range of 14 steps
The camera boasts a dynamic range of 14 steps, providing a precise image throughout, in both dark and bright areas. Even when shooting low-light scenes, which are particularly important in film productions, the VariCam LT delivers very low-noise images without compromising on quality. V-Log" technology is able to create all 14 steps of dynamic range with the VariCam LT's sensor, vastly increasing creative possibilities.
Dual native ISO settings of 800 and 5000
The VariCam LT incorporates two native ISO settings: 800 and 5000, providing high sensitivity with low noise at ISO 5000. The noise level at ISO 5000 is almost identical to that observed at ISO 800. To achieve this result, two analog circuits have been integrated into each pixel of the VariCam LT's sensor: one for each native ISO. As a result, the camera's sensitivity is higher without any increase in noise. Usually, with digital cameras, noise is due to the process of increasing ISO sensitivity. This feature of the VariCam is revolutionary for shooting low-light scenes, as the ISO 5000 sensitivity makes it possible in particular to shoot in natural light to preserve the ambience and make it more realistic.
Extended chromatic range
The VariCam LT is equipped with "V-Gamut" technology, giving it a wider color gamut than conventional film. V-Gamut technology also includes the entire BT. 2020.
Scene file and V-LOOK
The "V-Log" gamma curve provides a dynamic range of 14 steps, facilitating color calibration adjustments in post-production. The VariCam LT also features a new scene file function with 5 positions. VariCam-LOOK (V-LOOK) mode is a newly developed setting for creating cinematic images without color calibration. The VariCam LT also features a newly designed gamma curve that preserves detail over a wider tonal range in the Rec 709 color space. The "V-709" gamma setting offers a tone suitable for viewing on standard monitors, while the "BC-LOOK" creates an appearance resembling conventional TV images.
Monitor output terminals
When filming in 4K, the VariCam LT allows down-conversion to Full HD via two 3G HD SDI outputs and one VF (BNC) output. Your viewfinder image with integrated color calibration and information overlay can be applied to each output.
Advanced shooting functions for movie-making
Native resolution 4K / 60 p
The maximum frame rate when filming in 4K (4096×2160) or UHD (3840×2160) is 60 fps. This ensures smooth, high-resolution image reproduction when recording fast-moving action scenes.
Slow motion 2K & HD / 240 p
When filming in 2K (2048×1080) and HD (1920×1080) resolution, a high speed of 240 fps can be used to produce extreme slow motion. This is achieved by cropping the area recorded by the image sensor to acquire a higher scanning speed. Variable frame rates from 1 to 120 fps are possible in AVC-Intra 2K422 and from 120 to 240 fps in AVC-Intra 2K-LT. Frame rates can be changed during recording.
Infrared (IR) shooting
The VariCam LT incorporates a removable infrared filter. The user can film in infrared to obtain 4K images during night scenes without lighting. This is ideal, for example, for filming wildlife without lighting. The IR filter can also be used during the day, as a creative tool for unique images.
Control interface with integrated monitor
The control interface incorporates a 3.5-type LCD screen. It can be used to access menu commands or as a monitor for live previews. Keys and buttons are arranged around the screen for fast, precise operation. Frequently used settings are directly accessible. The removable structure allows the camera to be controlled from a distance of up to 90 cm.
Standard HD SDI interface for viewfinder
The VariCam LT features a conventional BNC connector for the viewfinder. Users can choose from various HD monitors or viewfinders, in addition to the new Panasonic viewfinder (AU-VCVF10G). DC power supply and Panasonic viewfinder control connectors are also supplied.
Robustness, durability and reliability
- The lens support is made of stainless steel and is designed to prevent flange shifting caused by temperature variations.
- The camera housing is made of rigid magnesium.
- The top and bottom faces are flat for easy installation of the various plates and accessories.
- There are mounting holes on both sides and on the handle for accessories.
- New accessories include the new AU-VSHL2G shoulder pad and AU-VGRP1G handle.
Revolutionary workflow: multi-codec and integrated rushes
Multi-codec 4K/UHD/2K/HD recording
AVC-Intra 4K is an intra-frame compression codec suitable for 4K cinematographic productions. Thanks to this codec, the VariCam LT can record in 4K (4096×2160) or UHD (3840×2160). For 2K recording, the VariCam LT supports the AVC-Intra 2K444/2K422/2K-LT codecs.
For HD recording, the VariCam LT supports AVC-Intra 444/422/100/LT and Apple ProRes 4444/HQ codecs. Thanks to the 256 GB expressP2 card, the camera can record approximately 90 minutes of 4K/23.98p video with the AVC-Intra 4K422 codec.

Integrated color calibration
The VariCam LT incorporates a color calibration function (3D LUT/CDL). This makes it possible to adjust colors on set or in the field, using the control interface or third-party software. The result is that rushes, which were previously created after the fact, can now be produced directly with the camera on set. Calibration information, such as 3D LUT and CDL files, can be saved with the image data, enabling the editing team to be provided with the same quality of shot as that created on set.
Main and proxy recording
In addition to recording in the main codec, the VariCam LT is capable of recording files to an SD memory card. This feature makes it possible to record a non-calibrated 4K master format with the V-Log function on an expressP2 card, while simultaneously recording calibrated HD files on the SD memory card. The first recording mode is used to create a deliverable product, while the proxy recording is intended for viewing and editing. The names and time codes of each file correspond exactly.
