The new WFT-E6 unit adds unprecedented Wi-Fi functionality to the EOS-1D X, offering benefits such as 802.11a/b/g and n compatibility, DLNA support, recording via FTP, EOS Utility and WFT server, as well as a linked shooting function for remote shutter release of other Wi-Fi-configured EOS-1D X cameras.
Perfect for photographers covering news and sporting events, the WFT-E6 unit enables images to be quickly transferred to an access point before being forwarded to the editorial photo department. Studio photographers will also appreciate the ability to preview their shots on the big screen by transferring them in JPEG format to their computer. Touring, landscape and nature photographers will appreciate the built-in Bluetooth compatibility, enabling photos to be geotagged via GPS connection. Finally, the more technically inclined can experiment with linked shooting and WFT Server mode to push back the frontiers of technology.

The WFT-E6 transmitter offers high-speed wireless file transfer via three transmission modes. FTP mode enables images to be transferred to an FTP server. EOS Utility mode enables bi-directional communication between the camera and a computer (comparable to a LAN or USB cable connection), while WFT Server mode enables images stored on the memory card to be displayed on a web browser.
Following on from the features initially available with the Canon EOS 7D digital SLR, the WFT-E6 unit offers the possibility of remotely triggering other EOS-1D X cameras equipped with WFT-E6 units. This means that a master camera equipped with a WFT-E6 unit can control up to 10 slave cameras also equipped with WFT-E6, WFT-E2 II, WFT-E4 II or WFT-E5 units, from a distance of up to 100 meters. This means you can shoot a subject from different angles simultaneously. Trigger delay between master and slave cameras is of the order of 0.05 s, regardless of distance (1 m or 100 m).
Thanks to the WFT server integrated into the WFT-E6 unit, the EOS-1D X can be controlled over Wi-Fi via an HTTP connection and a web browser. This means that the camera lens display is relayed to the web browser, and you can change settings and shooting functions directly from the browser (or on a smartphone or tablet). You can also browse and download the shots you've taken.
The WFT server incorporates a new transmission function. This combines the advantages of linked shooting and the WFT server, so that you can browse the content and change the settings of each remotely-linked camera. Similarly, triggering the master camera via the WFT server triggers all slave cameras.
To preserve the battery life of the EOS-1D X, the WFT-E6 offers a power-saving option. If the network power save setting is activated in the camera menu, the WFT-E6 disconnects from the remote FTP server and goes into standby mode once image transfer is complete. This saves battery power and avoids unnecessarily prolonging the connection to the server.
For the first time in the EOS and WFT range, the WFT-E6 unit features integrated Bluetooth functionality, enabling it to communicate directly with a Bluetooth GPS without a Bluetooth dongle, and automatically geotag images via their EXIF data.
The integration of the RJ-45 LAN port directly on the EOS-1D X has reduced the size and weight of the WFT-E6 unit compared with previous Canon wireless transmitter models.
