Softron MovieRecorder Express is an entry-level version of MovieRecorder. It uses the same reliable recording engine and user interface as MovieRecorder 4, with many outstanding features, such as downstream editing, NDI® sources, scheduling, remote control and more. That said, its functionality is limited. See below for a full list of features.
Softron MovieRecorder Express 4 software highlights
Editing during multi-channel ingestion (growing files)
Collective and scheduled recordings
Automatic detection of incoming video format
Integrated remote control
Automatic file naming and folder creation
NDI® sources
Redesigned user interface
MovieRecorder 4's new user interface is even more flexible and easy to use than its predecessor.
The first thing you'll notice, beyond its darker appearance, is that the size of the "Viewers" is now fully customizable. Select the number of viewers you wish to display at a time, then choose the layout that best suits your needs. MovieRecorder comes with a set of pre-configured layouts, but you can also customize them yourself.
All overlays can now be disabled if you simply wish to preview the video and not be distracted by their presence.
Even more additions, such as the ability to change the position of two sources, or activate/deactivate/solo a single destination to all viewers at once.
NDI® sources
Recording from these sources is now supported in MovieRecorder. NDI® is an open-by-latency video-over-IP protocol developed by NewTek ™. It uses a single gigabit Ethernet cable to transmit video and audio over a local network between multiple video systems. Now, thanks to NDI®, you can transfer HD and 4K video over a single Ethernet cable. There's no need for additional routers or even SDI cables. Reliable and easy. NDI® opens the world to a different way of doing video production, and to an ecosystem of devices supporting the protocol.
NDI® is a registered trademark of NewTek, Inc.
HEVC support
With the advent of 4K, an even more efficient codec than H.264 was needed. That's why HEVC/H265 was created. Files can be compressed to 40% of the size of an H.264 compression without loss of quality. But this coding efficiency required a lot of power, and even the highest-end Mac Pro wasn't capable of encoding in HEVC in real time. And for MovieRecorder, since we're coding live, we need real time!
On MacOS 10.13, Apple has added the possibility of using HEVC hardware acceleration available on certain computers (those using 6th-generation Intel Core and higher), enabling you to take full advantage of the codec.
Edit during recording
Users very often need their media to be "ready to edit" even if the event being recorded is still going on. This allows editors to start working on files earlier, and sometimes even before the show is over. Files created by MovieRecorder Express can be used in Apple's Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere Pro.
